Roger Federer and Florian Mayer meet Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Gerry Weber Open.

Roger Federer is coming off a victory over Ernests Gulbis and has played five sets this tournament. Despite the threat of being broken a few times, Federer cruised through the match, especially given his struggles in his first round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber. Federer has been on point this season, as he’s making a last real push to win titles. Federer has won six of his last seven matches and is moving better than he has in years. However, Federer  has to do a better job of attacking his opponent's second serve and being more aggressive. Still, getting matches done quickly is critical for Federer if he’s going to win this title. Federer is looking for an eighth career title at the Gerry Weber Open.

Florian Mayer also had a fairly easy second round opponent, as he beat Steve Johnson in straight sets. Mayer handled Johnson a lot easier than he did Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round, as the match took just 21 games to finish. Mayer had seven aces in the victory and limited his unforced errors to just 11. Mayer also got 67 percent of his first serves in play and hit 25 winners. Mayer will have to play a similar clean match if he’s going to have any shot of pulling off the upset here. Mayer could use a big victory after struggling this season and splitting his last six matches. Mayer is looking for his first Gerry Weber Open title and first since Bucharest in 2011.

These two have played each other five times, and Federer has won all five meetings. Their most recent match was in Hamburg in 2013, and that was the only match where Mayer was able to steal a set from Federer. This will be the third time these two have played on grass.

Mayer is simply in over his head in this one, as Federer is playing at a different level right now and has his eyes set on his third straight title at this event. I like Fed in straight sets.

Pick:
Roger Federer (straight sets)
