Roger Federer and Frances Tiafoe meet in the first round of the 2017 US Open.

Roger Federer enters this match 35-3 on the season and 23 of those victories have come on hard court. Federer has played just five matches since winning the Wimbledon, and his last match was losing the Canadian Open final to Alexander Zverev. Still, for the most part, Federer has been lights out all season long, as he has his return and serve working at an elite level. Federer has done a great job of taking care of his body with the proper rest, and he should be ready to make another deep run in the US Open. Federer hasn’t lost in the first round of a grand slam since the 2003 French Open. Federer has won 10 of his last 11 matches on hard court.

Frances Tiafoe is coming off a round of 16 appearance at the Cincinnati Masters, and he’s just 5-13 on the main tour this season. Needless to say, it’s been a rough season for the 19-year-old Tiafoe, but he’s certainly a dangerous first round opponent. Tiafoe is still one of the top young players in the game who has an above-average skill set and will certainly have crowd support from the Americans. These are just temporary growing pains for Tiafoe, as he’s still one of the more promising young players in the world. Tiafoe hopes to make the second round of a grand slam for the third time in his career. Tiafoe is 0-2 in his career at the US Open. Tiafoe has lost five of his last seven matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in this years Miami Masters, a match Federer won in straight sets. The match took 22 games to decide.

Tiafoe has the ability to make this closer than expected if he can get off to a strong start and build some confidence. The previous match between these two was competitive. However, Federer isn’t going to lose this match. He’s in too good of form and too consistent.

Roger rolls in three sets.
