Roger Federer and Jeremy Chardy meet in the fourth round of the 2018 Indian Wells Masters..
Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Filip Krajinovic that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 89 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Federer continues his ridiculous stretch of winning tennis, as he’s lost just two matches since the 2017 US Open and has won 10 straight sets. Federer has been incredible with his serve, and he’s coming off a match in which he won 59 percent of his return points. There’s not much to say about Federer that hasn’t been said, as the guy has been a machine the last year or so, and he’s not slowing down despite turning 37 years old later this summer. Federer has won 14 straight matches on hard court.
Jeremy Chardy is coming off a three sets win over Adrian Mannarino that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Chardy won 88 percent of his first serve points and 64 percent of his second serve points. Chardy has played eight sets already this tournament and has been very shaky with his second serve recently. The good news is Chardy won 42 of 48 first serve points in his last match, so as long as he gets it in play, he’s going to be a tough out. Still, Chardy is no longer the top-30 player he was a few years ago, and he’s trying to find his form after some wild inconsistencies. Chardy has 10 career wins over top-10 players, but only one of those victories have come since the 2016 season. Chardy has won six of his last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have played four times and Federer has won three of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2015 Monte Carlo Masters, a match won in straight sets. Chardy’s one win over Federer came in the 2014 Rome Masters. Federer is 2-0 against Chardy on hard court.
Chardy does have a win over Federer in limited matches, which is more we can say than a lot of other guys who have played him double-digit times. Still, picking against Federer in his current form isn’t an option. He’s not dropping sets let alone a match these days. Chardy isn’t serving well enough to put fear in him.
Federer wins in straight sets.
