Roger Federer and Milos Raonic meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Paris Masters.

Roger Federer is fresh off winning another title in Basel, and he’s now won 13 of his last 15 matches overall. While the record is impressive, Federer did struggle with his second serve throughout the Swiss Indoors and wasn’t playing nearly as clean tennis as you would have expected. Federer had to grind through three sets a couple of times and did have 12 double faults in his last three matches. Of course, Federer now won’t have the overwhelming home crowd behind him to get him over the hump. Of course, betting against Federer is always risky business, but it’s going to be interesting to see if he’s going to snap out of the recent funk or if it was just rust due to playing few matches since the US Open. It shouldn’t take long to see where Federer is at with his game. Federer has won 17 straight matches on indoor hard court.

Milos Raonic is coming off a three sets win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Raonic won 89 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Raonic won 79 percent of his total service points and saved his only two break points. Raonic had a brilliant serving performance, which included 23 aces, and he was able to snap a rough four-match losing streak. Raonic now hopes to win two matches in a single tournament for the first time since Tokyo. Raonic has 27 career wins over top-10 players, but only one of those victories came this year. Raonic has split his last six matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played 14 times and Federer has won 11 of those matches. The most recent meeting was in Stuttgart of this year, a match Federer won in straight sets. The last time Raonic won against Federer was in the 2016 Wimbledon. Federer is 6-2 against Raonic on hard court. Nine of the last 11 meetings have been decided in straight sets.

Raonic is capable of winning this match if he serves the way he just did, but consistency is an obvious issue. There’s also fatigue questions with Ranoic, as it takes a lot out of you physically to play three sets and three tiebreaks.

So, while Federer has been shaky recently, I’ll take him to win this match.
