Sam Querrey and Gael Monfils meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.

Sam Querrey is coming off a straight sets win over Sergiy Stakhovsky that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Querrey won 90 percent of his first serve points and 45 percent of his second serve points. Querrey is coming off a match in which he lost just six of 60 first serve points and wasn’t broken once. If that’s a sign of anything to come, Querrey has a real chance to make one of his deeper grand slam runs of his career. In fact, Querrey has dropped just nine first serve points and has saved all six of his break chances in his last two matches. Needless to say, the American is feeling himself right now. Querrey has a chance to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fourth time in his last nine tries. Querrey looks for three straight fourth round Wimbledon appearances. Querrey has won four of his last five matches on grass court.

Gael Monfils is coming off a four sets win over Paolo Lorenzi that took 44 games to decide. In the victory, Monfils won 75 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Monfils managed to win 67 percent of his total service points and had 49 winners in his second round victory. Monfils also showed great mental toughness in the victory, as he won despite dropping the first set, and he won back-to-back set tiebreaks. You can question Monfils and his decision making at times, but he’s been solid two matches into this tournament. Monfils hopes to make his fifth fourth round grand slam appearance since 2016. Monfils has never made the fourth round of the Wimbledon in his career. Monfils has won four of his last five matches on grass court.

These two have played twice and Monfils has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 Citi Open, a match that was decided in three sets. The other match took place in 2007.

I’m a sucker for Monfils and his play, as the guy is extremely talented and capable of beating anybody on a given day when he’s motivated. The problem is he’s never made the fourth round of the Wimbledon, and Querrey has been serving lights out. The american has dropped just nine first serve points in his last two matches combined. That’s unreal.

I’m a big fan of Monfils and usually root for him to do well, but Querrey should win this match.

Pick:
Sam Querrey
