The Line: -- Over/Under:
Sam Querrey and Gilles Simon meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Sydney International.
Sam Querrey is coming off a straight sets win over Malek Jaziri that took 12 games to decide. In the victory, Querrey won 100 percent of his first serve points and 78 percent of his second serve points. Querrey won all 17 first serve points and was in complete control of the match until Jaziri retired with a few more games left to play. Querrey was sharp for somebody who played his first match since October and could use a few more reps in this tournament before getting ready for the Australian Open. As long as Querrey is hitting his spots and serving at a high level, he’s going to be a tough out for anybody, as the American is always an underrated player capable of surprises. Querrey has split his last six matches on hard court.
Gilles Simon will play his first match of the tournament and is coming off a semifinal appearance in Pune. Simon has split his first four sets of the new season and is coming off a performance against Kevin Anderson in which he struggled with his second serve and produced just one break on 10 break chances. Simon has now won just seven of his last 13 matches, proving to be really inconsistent since winning his title in Metz. Simon needs to get going with the Australian Open approaching, the grand slam where he has the best winning percentage (66) in his career. Simon has split his last four matches on hard court.
These two have played eight times and Simon has won five of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2018 French Open, a match Simon won in four sets. Querrey has won two of the last three meetings against Simon, but is just 1-3 against him on hard court. Only three of the eight matches have been decided in straight sets.
Querrey plaid well in his last match and can win this contest if he continues to get free points with his serve. The problem is Simon owns the head to head rather convincingly and has the more all around game to frustrate the American. Simon keeps the ball in play, is crafty and has forced Querrey into a ton of unforced errors in past matches.
While he’s been hit or miss lately, Simon should win this match.
