Sam Querrey and Rafael Nadal meet in the quarterfinals of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Sam Querrey is coming off a four sets win over Tennys Sandgren that took 48 games to decide. In the victory, Querrey won 83 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent of his second serve points. Querrey won 75 percent of his total service points and converted on one of his five break points. Querrey got 66 percent of his first serves in play, saved all four of his break points and hit 25 aces. Querrey has been broken once in his last three matches and has a combined 78 aces during that span. Just incredible serving from the 31-year-old American. Querrey hopes to make his second career grand slam semifinal, and his second at Wimbledon. Querrey is 1-2 in grand slam quarterfinal matches. Querrey has 21 career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Querrey has won seven of his last eight matches on grass court.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Joao Sousa that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 86 percent of his first serve points and 69 percent of his second serve points. Nadal won 79 percent of his total service points and converted on six of his eight break points. Nadal got 57 percent of his first serves in play, didn’t face a single break point and hit 30 winners in a victory under two hours. Nadal has won 12 of his 13 sets this tournament, which is impressive for a guy who needed to play two exhibition matches to determine if he was fit to even participate. Nadal hopes to make his sixth straight grand slam semifinal appearance and his seventh career semifinal at Wimbledon. Nadal has won 17 of his last 20 grand slam quarterfinal matches. Nadal has won his last four matches on grass court.
These two have played five times and Nadal has won four of those meetings. However, Querrey won the most recent match in 2017 Acapulco, a match decided in straight sets. Two of the five matches were decided in straight sets, and this will be the first ever meeting on grass.
Querrey is more than capable of winning this match with the way he’s serving, as he’s giving away very little to his opponents and getting so many free points. Querrey also has success against Nadal, not only beating him in the last match but taking a set from him in three of the five matches overall. With that said, Nadal is tough to bet against once he gets to the business end of grand slam play, as he’s won 17 of his last 20 grand slam quarterfinal matches. Querrey also has a reputation of coming up short once the going gets tough.
I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s an upset, but I can’t bet against Nadal.
