Ekaterina Alexandrova and Serena Williams meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Rogers Cup.
Ekaterina Alexandrova is coming off a straight sets win over Shuai Zhang that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Alexandrova won 85 percent of her first serve points and 88 percent of her second serve points. Alexandrova won 86 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her seven break points. Alexandrova got 81 percent of her first serves in play, didn’t face a single break point and hit five aces. Alexandrova has lost just 11 games in her first two matches and has absolutely dominated her first serve. While it’s a small sample size, this clearly isn’t the same Alexandrova who at one point this year lost seven straight matches. Alexandrova will be a problem moving forward if she continues to serve at this level. Alexandrova has won six of her last nine matches on hard court.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Elise Mertens that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 76 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her 10 break points. Serena got 59 percent of her first serves in play and was broken twice. It wasn’t the cleanest performance from Serena, but she won in a little over an hour and now six of her last eight wins have been decided in straight sets. Serena looks to win at least two matches in her third straight tournaments. Serena has split her last six matches on hard court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Alexandrova just beat a respectable player to get to this point and has a chance at an upset if she continues to serve the way she has as of late. With that said, Serena has done well in the matches she’s played despite a lack of reps, and the fact she won easily without serving at a high level is a major confidence booster. Serena should iron out the wrinkles in her game as she gets more playing time under her belt.
Serena should reach the quarters.
