Serena Williams and Elina Svitolina square off in the fourth round of the 2016 French Open.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 72 percent of her first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Serena needed a second round tiebreak to get out of the third round and has racked up 58 winners in her last two matches. Serena could have certainly played better tennis, but that may be nitpicking considering she’s won no less than 72 percent of her first serve points and consistently comes up with big shots when needed most. Serena has now won her last nine matches in straight sets and is doing a better job of finishing her games quickly. Serena hopes to make her seventh straight grand slam quarterfinal appearance.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Ana Ivanovic that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 57 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina has lost just 11 games in her last two matches and has had 14 or less unforced errors in all three of her matches. Svitolina has 44 winners in her last two matches and has won nine of her 14 sets overall. However, Svitolina has to be far more consistent with her service game if she has any hope of pulling off the monster upset in this match. Svitolina looks for her second career grand slam quarterfinal appearance and first since last years French Open.
These two have met three times in the past, and Serena won all three meetings, two of which were decided in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2015 Cincinnati Masters. This will be the second time these two meet on clay court.
Svitolina is playing very good tennis and will put up a better fight against Serena than she has in the past. However, betting against Serena in these spots in her overall current form is a waste of money.
Give me Serena again in straight sets.
