Serena Williams and Elina Svitolina meet in the third round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Alizé Cornet that took 21 games to decide. Serena didn’t play her best at all in the second round victory, as she racked up a lot of unforced errors and Cornet faced a couple of set points in the opening set. However, Serena buckled down after a set that lasted well over an hour and was able to put it away pretty easily. Serena continues to show she can win matches without being in her best form, which is scary for the rest of the pack. Serena looks to make her third olympic quarterfinal. Serena has won 15 of her last 18 matches on hard court.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a three set victory over Heather Watson that took 25 games to decide. Svitolina came into this tournament being a hit or miss, but she’s managed to survive playing back-to-back three set matches and has looked sharp overall in the four sets she’s won. This has been a breakout season for the 21-year-old Svitolina, and a olympic quarterfinal appearance would be another nice stepping stone. However, Svitolina has to be more consistent if she hopes to pull off the monster upset here. Svitolina has five career victories over top-10 players. Svitolina has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
These two have played four times in the past and Serena has won all four meetings, three of which in straight sets. The most recent match was in this year's French Open, a match that was decided in 14 games.
You guys know the drill by now; nobody is beating Serena in her current form and history between these two indicate Svitolina doesn’t stand much of a chance. Not to mention Serena just won a match without playing her best.
Give me Serena in straight sets and put her in the quarterfinals.
