Serena Williams vs Eugenie Bouchard - 01/17/19 WTA Tour - Australian Open Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

American tennis superstar, Serena Williams has made it into the second round of the 2019 WTA Australian Open. At this stage of the tournament, Serena Williams is set to play Eugenie Bouchard from Canada.

Serena Williams won her opening round match in straight sets as she beat Tatjana Maria in straight sets. It was an emphatic performance by Serena as she only allowed her opponent to win 2 games in the entire set. It was impressive to watch Serena Williams serve. Williams won over 80% of the points played during her service which ensured that she won all of her service games. Serena Williams has won the Australian Open 8 times in the past. With such a strong record at Melbourne Park, Serena will be very hard to stop.

On the other side of the coin, Eugenie Bouchard also won her opening round match in straight sets. Bouchard returned serve exceptionally well as she won 56% of her receiving points which resulted in her winning 6 break points. It is important to note that Bouchard struggled with her serve as she allowed her opponent to win a return game. Bouchard has a decent record at the Australian Open as she made the semi-finals in 2014. While Bouchard is not at the same level as 5 years ago, the Canadian should cause Serena some problems.

Serena Williams and Eugenie Bouchard have played twice in the past. Serena won both of those matches. The most recent match between these two players was in 2014 at the WTA Championships where Serena won in straight sets.

Eugenie Bouchard has looked good this season and I expect her to play well in this match. That being said, I still think Serena will be too strong. Serena looked exceptional in her opening match and I think she will be too strong for Eugenie Bouchard.
