The Line: -- Over/Under:
Serena Williams and Giulia Gatto-Monticone meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Serena Williams hasn’t played a match since the third round of the French Open, which also means she hasn’t played a grass court match since making the final of the Wimbledon last year. While Serena obviously has the experience and champions can make adjustments on the flay, grass is a very tricky surface and can take time getting used to again. Serena has played just four matches overall since the Miami Open and has battled some injuries here and there, so form is certainly a question entering this tournament. It may take Serena a few sets before we get a good feel for her game and a proper prediction on how far she could go. Serena has won six of her last seven matches on grass court.
Giulia Gatto-Monticone is a 31-year-old Italian who won three matches to qualify for just her second grand slam appearance. The other trip was this years French Open where she lost to Sofia Kenin in three competitive sets. Gatto-Monticone has won 10 of her last 14 matches overall, but almost all of those wins came in qualifying or ITF play. Gatto-Monticone lacks consistency on the main tour and is obviously extremely green when it comes to grand slam play. The good news for Gatto-Monticone is that she heads into this match playing with house money, so the lack of expectations will allow her to go for her shots. Gatto-Monticone has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
While Serena has major question marks of her own and can’t be considered a strong contender due to the lack of reps, she should have her way with somebody who isn’t used to this level of competition or this stage. While there’s shocking upsets in the first couple of rounds every year, there’s also many examples of inexperienced players getting chewed up and spit out. Gatto-Monticone will be climbing uphill most of this match.
Serena in straight sets.
