Serena Williams and Kiki Bertens square off early in the semifinals of the 2016 French Open.
Serena Williams is coming off a three set win over Yulia Putintseva that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 68 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Serena is coming off a match in which she had 43 unforced and got just 63 percent of her first serves in play. Serena has lost just one set this tournament and has played 43 games games in her last two matches. Serena is the clear frontrunner for the French Open title, but the lack of rest may be her only downfall to a victory. Serena hopes to make her sixth grand slam final in her last seven appearances. This would be Serena’s fourth career French Open final appearance.
Kiki Bertens is coming off a straight sets win over Timea Bacsinszky that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Bertens won 60 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Bertens has dropped just two sets this tournament and has played 42 games in her last two matches. Bertens is getting no less than 60 percent of her first serves in play and has racked up 33 winners in her last two matches. Bertens has 30-plus unforced errors in three of her five matches, something she has to cut down to pull off this upset. Bertens now has three career wins over top-10 players which includes two in this tournament. Bertens hopes to make her first career grand slam final.
These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2015 US Open, a match Serena won in 22 games. This will obviously be the first time they play on clay court.
Even with the lack of rest, Serena continues to play well and has a clear path to another grand slam title with all of the big names being bounced. Bertens is playing well, but none of the players she’s played were Serena.
Give me Serena to advance to the final.
