Serena Williams and Madison Keys square off Sunday afternoon in the 2016 Rome Masters Final.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets victory over Irina-Camelia Begu that was decided in 17 games. Serena is picking up momentum with victories in 11 of her last 13 matches and hasn’t dropped a set this tournament. Serena has looked great in her return game and has dropped just one game in her final two sets. Serena has lost just seven games in her final two matches overall and is looking more and more like the dominant player we’re used to seeing before a major takes place. Serena hopes to win her fourth Rome Masters of her career. This is also Serena’s third final appearance this season, and she’s searching for her first title.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets victory over Garbiñe Muguruza that took 23 games to decide. Keys has been rolling as of late with wins in eight of her last nine matches and dropping just one set this tournament. Keys is doing a great job of limiting her unforced errors and is hitting her winners with overwhelming power. When Keys isn’t making mistakes and hitting her spots, she’s more than capable of being a top-10 player. Keys looks for just her second career singles title, and this is just her third final appearance of her career. Keys only career title came in the 2014 AEGON International.
These two have played twice in the past, and Serena won both meetings in straight sets. The most recent match was in last years US Open and the other was in last years Australian Open. This will obviously be the first time these two meet on clay court.
Keys has the power to hang with Serena and has already beaten three top-10 players this season. You also have to be concerned with Serena choking in her last two final appearances. However, Serena has looked great this tournament and hasn’t shown signs of falling apart like she has in the past. Serena has also handled Keys rather easily in their previous matches.
You have to like Serena to win her 70th singles title.
