Serena Williams and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni meet in the semifinals of the 2017 Australian Open.

Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Konta that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 88 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Serena has yet to drop a set this tournament and is now the head and shoulders favorite to win the tournament based on the rest of the draw. Serena is serving well, hitting her spots and has yet to waste unnecessary energy to win a match. When Serena is in this form and doesn’t give her opponent any breathing room, she’s pretty much unbeatable. Serena hopes to make her eighth career Australian Open final. Serena has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is coming off a three set win over Karolina Pliskova that took 29 games to decide. In the victory, Lucic-Baroni won 70 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Lucic-Baroni is having fun out on the court and has hit no less than 33 winners in each of her five matches. Lucic-Baroni is serving well and has been the feel good story of the tournament on either side. Lucic-Baroni is in her first grand slam semifinal since the 1999 Wimbledon and can beat three top-10 players in one season for the first time in her career. Lucic-Baroni also hopes to make her first career grand slam final. Lucic-Baroni has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.

These two have played twice in the past and Serena has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 1998 Wimbledon, a match Serena won in 15 games. This will be the second meeting on hard court.

Lucic-Baroni is a feel good story and it’s nice to see her have some serious success on a big stage for the first time in over a decade. Unfortunately, Serena is looking like Serena and she can see the finish line with players who respectfully weren’t supposed to make it deep in this tournament. There’s not much a 34-year-old Lucic-Baroni can do in this match.

The tennis world would be shocked if Serena was tripped up in this match.
