Serena Williams and Simona Halep meet in the final of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Barbora Strycova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 89 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 75 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her five break points. Serena got 61 percent of hr first serves in play, saved all three of her break points and hit 28 winners to 10 unforced errors. Serena has gotten her elite serve back and has now cleaned up the silly mistakes, meaning she’s playing about as well as she has since the return from her pregnancy. Serena hopes to win her first grand slam title since the 2017 Australian Open and her 24th grand slam title overall. Serena has won 10 of her last 14 grand slam final appearances overall and is 7-3 in Wimbledon final appearances for her career. Serena has won 12 of her last 13 matches on grass court.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 74 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 65 percent of her total service points and converted on five of her eight break points. Halep got 70 percent of her first serves in play, saved four of her five break points and hit 26 winners to 16 unforced errors. Halep has now won each of her last nine sets and has ben highly effective with her first serve in her last two matches, winning 73 of 100 points. Halep hopes to win her second grand slam title and the 19th title of her career. Halep is 1-3 in career grand slam final appearances and this is her first shot to win Wimbledon. Halep has lost nine of her last 12 final appearances overall. Halep has won eight of her last nine matches on grass court.
These two have played 10 times and Serena has won nine of those matches, including the most recent match in this years Australian Open. Serena also won the only match on grass, which was in the 2011 Wimbledon, their first meeting overall. Halep’s only win over Serena came in the 2011 Singapore Finals. Six of the 10 matches have been decided in straight sets.
Not only has Serena owned Halep over the years, but we have a hungry player who is desperate for her 24th grand slam title and isn’t sure how many more chances she’ll get beyond this given her age. Halep has admitted she’s fine with her career now that she got a grand slam title out of the way and everything beyond this is gravy. That’s scary when going up against an ultra competitor who hates losing more than enjoys winning. Also, Halep has a ridiculous track record of coming up small in final appearances, losing three of her four grand slam finals and nine of her last 12 finals overall. Every time I back Halep in a final, I say to myself never again.
Serena ties Margaret Court with 24 grand slam titles.
