Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis French Open.

Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Kurumi Nara that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 85 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 80 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her 12 break points. Serena got 73 percent of her first serves in play, hit 10 aces and didn’t face a single break point. Serena can still clean up the 21 unforced errors, but it was a match that showed she’s on the right path to returning to the player she was before the injuries. As long as Serena has her serve going, she’s more than capable of winning yet another grand slam title, even with the lack of reps this year. Serena hasn’t been bounced before the fourth round of a grand slam since the 2014 Wimbledon. Serena has won three of her last four matches on clay court.

Sofia Kenin is coming off a victory over Bianca Andreescu due to a walkover, as the Canadian was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury. Kenin has a clear rest advantage that should help, but she has to play better to have any shot in this tournament. Kenin won just 54 percent of her total service points in her opening match and was broken six times. If Kenin can’t get free points and avoid long rallies where she has to work hard for everything, she has little chance of hanging around in this contest. Kenin has a chance to win three straight matches for the first time since making the final in Acapulco back in March. Kenin looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Kenin has won four of her last six matches on clay court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Kenin didn’t look good in her opener, so I’m concerned about that heading into this match. Serena had a classic serving performance in the second round, and if that’s an indication of things moving forward, you should be betting on her to win the title. Serena cruises in this match if she plays anywhere close to the way she did in Thursday’s victory.

Give me Serena in straight sets.
