Serena Williams and Vania King meet in the second round of the 2016 US Open.

Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets victory over Ekaterina Makarova that took 18 games to decide. Serena looked comfortable out on the court and wasn’t forcing anything offensively. There were serious concerns about Serena’s shoulder heading into this tournament, but those questions may have been put to bed for now. Serena was highly efficient and didn’t have to use her power game much to win points. If Serena can duplicate that performance, she’ll win this tournament with ease. Serena hasn’t lost in a grand slam before the third round since the 2014 French Open. Serena has won 10 of her last 13 matches on hard court.

Vania King is coming off a straight sets win over Antonia Lottner that took 22 games to decide. King managed to win a draining first set tiebreak and then took over the match from there in impressive fashion. King will have to be as sharp with her service game in this match in order to have any chance of being competitive. A fast start could get the crowd on her side early, but it’s hard seeing New York root against Serena. King simply has to play the cleanest game she’s played all season to stay in this match. King hasn’t made the third round of a grand slam since the 2012 Australian Open. King has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2014 US Open, a match Serena won in straight sets. The match took 13 games to decide.

Serena got the tough first round match out of the way and now should be able to relax and cruise into the next round. Her shoulder looks fine and King doesn’t have much that should give the No. 1 player issues.

Serena in straight sets, as usual.
