Venus Williams vs. Serena Williams
|Date & Time||Tuesday September 8, 2015, 10:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Serena Williams and Venus Williams meet in the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Madison Keys and has played nine sets this tournament. Serena is winning at least 79 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Serena has combined for 20 aces, 94 winners and 68 unforced errors in her last three matches. Serena is slowly starting to calm her nerves and is playing far cleaner tennis since her matches against Kiki Bertens and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The only concern with Serena remains her second serve, as she’s winning a low percentage of her points the second time. Serena hasn’t been eliminated in the quarterfinals of a grand slam since the 2013 Australian Open. Serena has made at least the semifinal of the US Open each season since 2008.
Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Anett Kontaveit and has played 10 sets this tournament. Venus is winning at least 65 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Venus has combined for 15 aces, 81 winners and 71 unforced errors in her last three matches. Venus is starting to get comfortable after two long matches in the opening rounds, and she has just 24 unforced errors in her last two matches. Venus has been even better on her first serve lately and is a threat to anyone if she can continue to keep her errors at a low number. Venus has not made the semifinal of a grand slam since the 2010 US Open. This is Venus’ second grand slam quarterfinal appearance this season.
Serena and Venus have played 26 times, and Serena leads the series 15-11. The most recent match was in this year’s Wimbledon, a match Serena won in straight sets, and she’s beaten Venus in five of the last seven meetings. Venus most recent win over Serena came in the 2014 Canadian Masters. This will be the 19th time the sisters play on hard court.
Talk about storylines, huh?
While Venus is playing sharp tennis lately, none of her previous matches were Serena. Serena is simply by far the better player at this point and should have little trouble winning this match as we’ve seen lately when these two meet up.
