Serena Williams and Yulia Putintseva meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 French Open.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 72 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Serena played some of the best tennis she played all tournament, as she had just 17 unforced errors and looked fresh due to so many rain delays. Serena has now racked up 54 winners in her last two matches and is winning no less than 72 percent of her first serve points. Serena hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the seventh straight time. Serena looks for her third French Open semifinal appearance since the 2004 season.
Yulia Putintseva is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suárez Navarro that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Putintseva won 63 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Putintseva continues to be the cinderella of the tournament after making light work of a top-15 player in the world. Putintseva has now lost just 12 games in her last two matches and has produced 45 winners during those matches. Putintseva has yet to drop a set this tournament and is getting no less than 62 percent of her first serves in play. At just 21 years old, this is clearly a breakthrough moment for Putintseva. Putintseva hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the first time in her young career.
These two have played twice in the past, and Serena has won both meetings in straight sets. The two wins came in this year's Indian Wells Masters and 2013 Madrid Masters. Putintseva has won 13 games against Serena in four sets.
Even with the rain delays, this field as setup perfectly for Serena to win another grand slam. All the heavy hitters have been eliminated.
