Shuai Peng and Caroline Wozniacki will battle it out for a spot in the 2014 US Open final.
Shuai Peng hasn’t come close to dropping a set in this tournament, playing no more than 19 games in a single match. Peng simply overwhelmed the younger Belinda Bencic in her most recent match, losing just three games. In the victory, Peng had five aces, won 73 percent of her first serve points and limited herself to just seven unforced errors. The clean and nearly error free tennis Shuai Peng has played throughout this tournament is the reason she’s playing in her first major semifinal of her career. Peng isn’t exactly overpowering her opponents or making incredible shots, she’s just not making mistakes and is executing on her opportunites. This is by far Peng’s most success in a major ever.
Caroline Wozniacki has made a strong statement in this tournament not only by beating Maria Sharapova, but by simply dominating Sara Errani in just 13 games. In the victory, Wozniacki won 71 percent of her first serve points, 75 percent of her net points and 76 percent of her receiving points. In was one of the more jaw-dropping and lopsided performances we’ve seen in a major quarterfinal match in quite some time. Of course, Wozniacki has been playing great tennis for a while now, winning 13 of her last 16 overall matches, and two of those losses came from Serena Williams. Wozniacki is frustrating opponents with her speed and the ability to stay in games she has no business being in. Caroline Wozniacki’s only career major final appearance was the 2009 US Open.
These two have played each other six times and Caroline Wozniacki leads the series, 5-1. In fact, Shuai Peng's only victory over Wozniacki was the first time they met in the 2007 Canadian Masters. Since then, Wozniacki has won each match fairly easily. Their most recent match was in New Heaven in 2013. This will be the fifth time they've met on hard court.
While I like the way Shuai Peng has played, Wozniacki is a completely different challenge. It's also rare where somebody who goes from having little to no major success and all of a sudden reaches a major final.
Give me Wozniacki to reach her second career grand slam final.
