Simona Halep and Ajla Tomljanovic meet in the second round of the tennis Cincinnati Open.

Simona Halep is fresh off her third title of the year after winning the Canadian Open, and she’s building serious momentum as we gear up for the US Open. Halep has never won the Cincinnati Open, but she has made the final two of the last three years, so she knows a thing about this event as well. Halep is not only playing some of her best tennis as of late, but her mental game has improved by leaps and bounds. Halep usually got down on herself and threw matches away, now she’s staying calm and putting poor points behind her. This is the best Halep has ever looked at 26 years old. Halep is 16-6 for matches in her career at the Cincinnati Open. Halep has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.

Ajla Tomljanovic is coming off a straight sets win over Irina Begu that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Tomljanovic won 68 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Tomljanovic won 55 percent of her service points and converted on eight of her 17 break points. Tomljanovic will have to serve much better to have any chance of winning this match, but her return gives her a punchers chance, as she’s produced 16 breaks in her last three non-qualfhing matches. Tomljanovic has one career victory over a top-10 player, which came against Agnieszka Radwanska back in 2014. Needless to say, there’s little to no pressure on Tomljanovic to win this match. Tomljanovic has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

There’s no match history between these two players.

Backing Halep in a bet used to be risky due to her mood swings, but fading Halep these days is even worse. She’s the best player in the world right now and has found the missing key in her game under coaches Darren Cahill and Andrei Pavel. Halep is no longer beating herself, which means the final appearances are going to come by the boatload.

Halep cruises in straight sets.
