Riske vs. Halep

The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Alison Riske meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Simona Halep enters this tournament with a 26-6 record, but she has to be frustrated due to the lack of titles this success has brought. Halep is coming off a final loss to Elina Svitolina in the Rome Masters, a match in which she looked nothing like herself, winning under 60 percent of her total serves. Halep has the game to beat anybody on tour, but there still seems to be issues with nerves when she gets deep into the tournament. Still, Halep has reached the final in two of her last four French Open appearances. Halep has lost in the first round of a grand slam three times since 2016. Halep has won seven of her last nine matches on clay.
Alison Riske is currently making a run in Nuremberg and hopes its the tournament that turns her season around. Riske has struggled on the main tour each of the last two years and is simply looking for some sort of consistency, as she’s really fallen off since making three final appearances back in 2016. Still, Riske has beaten some quality names in the past, so she can’t be completely overlooked despite her shaky form. Riske has lost in the first round of a grand slam in 10 of her last 12 appearances. Riske has five career wins over top-10 players, with one of them coming in Miami (Caroline Garcia) of this year. Riske has lost five of her last seven matches on clay.
These two have played twice and Halep has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Beijing Open, a match Halep won in three sets. The other match was in the 2015 Rome Masters.
Riske has done nothing in grand slam play throughout her career and isn’t good on clay to put it nicely. Halep still has issues winning the big matches, but she’s chewed up and spit out lesser talented players to get to the big match. This is a routine first round match for the Romanian.
Halep wins in straight sets.
