Simona Halep and Andrea Petkovic meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Taylor Townsend that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 76 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Halep was dominant in the second round, winning 54 percent of her return points and producing just 13 unforced errors. If Halep can prevent the silly mistakes and avoid anything that gets her upset, she should feel good about her chances of winning her first grand slam. The mental game has always been Halep’s downfall and something that can give her opponent a chance of pulling off the victory. Halep hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the seventh time in her last nine tries. Halep has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.

Andrea Petkovic is coming off a straight sets win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Petkovic won 74 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Petkovic won 48 percent of her return points and produced four breaks in her second round victory. However, in order for Petkovic to advance any further, she must be more effective with her second serve and keep her unforced error numbers under 20. Fix those two areas, and Petkovic has a shot to get her biggest victory in quite some time. Petkovic has 11 career wins over top-10 players, but none of those victories have come since 2016. Petkovic hopes to make her first fourth round of a grand slam since the 2014 French Open. Petkovic has split her last four matches on clay court.

These two have played eight times and Halep has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2016 Davis Cup, a match Halep won in three sets. Petkovic’s only win over Halep came in 2009, the first ever meeting between these two players.

Petkovic has been decent in her first two wins, but she’s not in form to beat one of the hottest players in the draw. Petkovic came into this tournament losing seven of her last nine matches on the main tour and has usually fizzles out around this time in grand slam play. Halep has been lights out before finals this season.

Halep rolls in straight sets.
