Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber square off in the semifinals of the 2016 Rogers Cup.
Simona Halep is coming off a three set win over Svetlana Kuznetsova that took 23 games to decide. Halep seems like she’s found her rhythm as of late since winning the Bucharest Open and winning 16 of her last 18 sets overall. Halep has been very consistent as of late and seems like somebody who can inch closer to the No. 2 ranking, a spot she had a couple of years ago. Halep is in a nice space right now and is doing a nice job of controlling rallies, making her the most effective. Halep hopes to make her third final appearance this season and has won four of her last six semifinal appearances overall. Halep has won nine of her last 11 matches on hard court.
Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 16 games to decide. Kerber is coming off her easiest match of the tournament and has now won 12 of her last 15 matches overall. Kerber is doing a fine job with her return and forcing her opponent make the mistakes in these long rallies. Kerber is doing a fine job of holding onto that No. 2 spot in the world and has now won 20 of her last 25 singles sets. Kerber looks to reach her fifth final appearance this season and won five of her last seven semifinals appearances overall. Kerber has also won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played five times in the past and Halep has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Wimbledon, a match Keber won in straight sets. Keber has actually beaten Halep the last two matches with her last loss coming in the 2015 Rogers Cup.
I think Halep is the better player between these two and she has what it takes to get the victory given her current form. Halep is also a feisty player who would love nothing more than to get revenge for her frustrating Wimbledon loss.
I see Halep winning this match and it could be in straight sets if Kerber struggles with her service game.
