Simona Halep and Aryna Sabalenka meet in the semifinals of the tennis Cincinnati Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Lesia Tsurenko that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 44 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Halep won a straight sets match despite getting nothing on her first serve and being broken three times. It wasn’t the best performance ever from Halep, but she finds ways to win regardless and has produced 11 breaks in her last two matches. Halep should also be fine conditioning wise considering she finished two matches in a little over two full hours of tennis. Halep is getting quick and painless results these days. Halep has a chance to make her sixth final appearance of the year and the 33rd of her career. Halep can also make the final of the Cincinnati Open for the third time in the last four years. Halep has won eight straight matches on hard court.
Aryna Sabalenka is coming off a straight sets win over Madison Keys that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Sabalenka won 79 percent of her first serve points and 45 percent of her second serve points. Sabalenka got 61 percent of her first serves in play and won 66 percent of her total service points. Sabalenka used her power shots to push around the American, and she managed to save all 10 of her break points. Since Eastbourne, we’ve been seeing a more mature and confident Sabalenka, and she’s more than capable of winning any match you put in front of her in her current form. Sabalenka has a chance to reach her third final of the year and her fourth final appearance of her career. A win here would easily put Sabalenka in the biggest final of her career at 20 years old. Sabalenka has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played once, which was in this years Shenzhen Open, a match Halep won in straight sets. The match took 16 games to be decided.
Sabalenka is a dangerous player with the way she’s playing and has the power to push Halep around. However, betting against Halep this season hasn’t worked much. Halep is playing the best and most consistent tennis of her life and no longer has those mental letdowns where she throws matches away due to a loss of confidence. Halep is able to overcome poor games and win the match regardless.
Right now, it’s Halep’s world and we’re just living in it.
