Simona Halep and Asia Muhammad meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis US Open.

Simona Halep is coming off a final appearance in Cincinnati in which she lost, and she didn’t play in Connecticut in order to be fresh for this tournament. Halep is currently enjoying the best year of her life, as she’s playing at an extremely high level and has improved her mental game that let her down so many times in the past. In her last performance, however, Halep struggled with her serve and was broken four times. Halep hasn’t lost back-to-back matches since last years US Open and Wuhan. Halep has lost in the first round of a grand slam three times since 2016. Halep has won nine of her last 10 matches on hard court.

Asia Muhammad has had a ton of success in ITF doubles play this year and is coming off a singles title in Lexington. Muhammad didn’t qualify for Connecticut and has had little to no experience on the big stage, but she’s played well enough in other areas to give her some sort of confidence heading into this tournament. Muhammad should also have the American crowd behind her, as the 27-year-old was born in California and currently resides in Las Vegas. If Muhammad is able to get off to a fast start and gets the crowd believing there’s a potential upset, it could be enough to help her earn the biggest win of her life. Muhammad has never made the second round of a grand slam. Muhammad has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

There’s no previous matches between these two players.

There’s usually always upsets early on the women’s side, but this won’t be one of them. Halep is playing too well and Muhammad is too green to get the job done. I’d be shocked if Muhammad even made this a competitive match due to the lack of experience.

I’ll have Halep in straight sets and would probably look at the under as well.
