Simona Halep and Barbora Strycova meet in the first round of the 2019 tennis Wuhan Open.
Simona Halep will play her first match since losing in the second round of the US Open, so while she’s well rested, it’s going to be interesting if there’s any rust in her game. Halep was the favorite to win the tournament in New York, but she was bounced early due to 23 unforced errors and getting broken three times. Each of Halep’s last four matches have gone the distance. Halep hasn’t lost an opening match of a tournament since Rome of this year. Halep has split her last six matches on hard court.
Barbora Strycova is coming off a straight sets win over Xiyu Wang that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Strycova won 72 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Strycova won 63 percent of her total service points and converted on four of her eight break points. Strycova got 73 percent of her first serves in play and saved five of her six break points. Strycova looks to win back-to-back matches on the main tour for the first time since Wimbledon. Strycova has 10 career wins over top-10 players, with one of those wins coming this year. Strycova has lost four of her last five matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Halep has won all five meetings, including the most recent match this year in Indian Wells. In fact, Strycova has never even won a set against Halep.
Strycova is a more than respectable player and could give a possible rusty Halep some issues. However, the history between these two doesn’t lie. In five meetings, Strycova hasn’t even won a set against Halep. That says a lot heading into this meeting.
Give me Halep in straight sets.
