The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Carla Suarez Navarro meet in the fourth round of the 2016 US Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a three set win over Timea Babos that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 57 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Halep lost a set in this tournament for the first time and wasn’t as sharp as she’s been in the past, producing 35 ugly unforced errors. However, Halep continues to find ways to win and has been rock solid overall, losing just 14 games in the six sets she’s won leading up to this point. Halep hopes to make her seventh career grand slam quarterfinal. Halep has won 11 of her last 12 matches on hard court.
Carla Suarez Navarro is coming off a straight sets win over Elena Vesnina that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Navarro won 68 percent of her first serve points and 60 percent of her second serve points. Navarro has yet to drop a set this tournament and has lost just 12 games in her first three matches. Navarro hasn’t had much previous success at the US Open, but she’s playing some of her best tennis right now and has to be extremely confident. Navarro also has four victories this season over top-10 players. Navarro hopes to make her sixth career grand slam quarterfinal. Navarro has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have split their previous 10 meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Rome Masters, a match Navarro won in three sets. Halep has beaten Navarro in three of the last five meetings.
The history between these two suggests a well played fourth round match. And while that may be the case, it’s a match Halep should win in her current form. She’s likely not going to have so many unforced errors and her shotmaking is going to give Navarro issues.
I like Halep to get to the quarters.
