Simona Halep and Caroline Garcia meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Simona Halep is coming off a walkover win over Madison Keys. The American was forced to retire from the third round match due to a right rib injury. Halep has now played just 13 games to get to this point, giving her a major rest advantage over the rest of the field. As if Halep winning 20 of her last 26 played sets on clay court wasn’t enough, she now has almost zero wear and tear as she looks for her fourth career semifinal appearance in the Italian Open. Halep has to be the clear favorite to win the tournament at this point. Halep hopes to make a semifinal in a WTA Premier 5 tournament for the eighth time in her last nine appearances. Halep has won 11 of her last 13 matches on clay court.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 78 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Garcia won a tight second set tiebreak and managed to win 72 percent of her total service points. Garcia has now won 12 of her last 14 sets on clay court and is in the quarterfinals for a third straight tournament. It was a shaky start to the season for the 24-year-old, but Garcia has found her form on this surface and is capable of beating anybody in her current form. The confidence is certainly there. Garcia has won four of her last six quarterfinal appearances. Garcia hopes to make her second career semifinal appearance in a Premier 5 tournament. Garcia has won seven of her last nine matches on clay court.
These two have played four matches and Halep has won three of those matches. The most recent match was in the 2017 WTA Championships, a match Halep won in straight sets. Garcia’s only win over Halep came in the 2017 Beijing Open. This will be their first meeting on clay.
We’ve made good money on Garcia when oddsmakers and the betting public underrate her ability, especially on clay court. Garcia is often that quality player who is overlooked. However, betting against Halep in her current form isn’t wise. She’s not only playing at a high level all season, but she has zero wear and tear to get here due to Keys dropping out.
Halep beats Garcia yet again.
