The Line: Wozniacki +105 / Halep -140 -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki meet in the 2017 WTA Finals.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Caroline Garcia that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 64 percent of her first serve points and 68 percent of her second serve points. Halep was really solid in her opening match, as she served at a high level, won long rallies and won 48 percent of her return points. When Halep is hitting the ball with confidence and being the aggressor, she’s possibly the toughest player in this field. It’s all about consistency with Halep, as she can get down on herself at times and give away easy points. Halep hopes to make it out of round robin play in the WTA Finals for the first time since 2014. Halep has won eight of her last 12 matches on hard court.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 76 percent of her first serve points and 62 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki simply dominated her opening match, which included winning the second set 6-0. Wozniacki won 62 percent of her return points and converted on all five of her break chances. Wozniacki has been hit or miss coming into this tournament, but if she’s going to play like that, she has as good of a chance to win this title as anyone. Wozniacki has made it out of the round robin stages in three of her previous four appearances in the WTA Finals. Wozniacki has won four of her last six matches on hard court.
These two have played five times and Wozniacki has won three of those matches. The most recent match was in Eastbourne of this year, a match Wozniacki won in three sets. Wozniacki has won the last two matches, and her last loss was in Dubai of 2015. The last three matches went three sets.
I would look at the over once a line is released, as the past three matches have gone the distance and these two are returning the ball very well. There’s sure to be a lot of breaks in this contest. However, in terms of a side, I’m going with Halep. I have more trust in her game overall right now and think she can dictate pace against Wozniacki. Keep her running and wear her down. It’s also important to note that Halep is 2-1 against Wozniacki on hard court.
Close match, but I have Halep getting the victory.
