The Line: Svitolina +200 / Halep -250 -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina meet in the quarterfinals of the 2017 French Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 68 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Halep is coming off her best performance yet and has dropped just seven games in her last two matches combined. Halep has broken her opponents a combined 24 times and is winning no less than 48 percent of her return points overall. This is the best Halep we've seen in awhile, especially on clay court. Halep hopes to make the semifinals of a grand slam for the fourth time in her career. Halep is 3-4 in her career in grand slam quarterfinals. Halep has won 14 of her last 15 matches on clay court.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a three set win over Petra Martic that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 63 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina found a way to win her fourth round match despite dropping the first set and being down in the third. Svitolina has produced a combined 65 unforced errors in her last two matches, a number she must improve if she hopes to make a deeper run. The good news is Svitolina has shown she can come back now twice in this tournament, and she's going to make the shots when needed most. Svitolina has a chance to make her first ever grand slam semifinal. Svitolina’s only other grand slam quarterfinal was in the 2015 French Open. Svitolina has won nine straight matches on clay court.
These two have played once in the past, which was in this year's Rome Masters, a match Svitolina won in three sets. The match took 29 games to decide. This will obviously be their second meeting on clay.
Svitolina has had a rather easy path to the quarters and has still had her fair share of struggles. If those unforced errors continue to creep into her game, Halep is going to eat her alive. In the meeting a couple weeks ago, Halep did not serve well and showed her usual frustration that affects her later in the match. That's not the case here, as Halep has been one of the more consistent players this tournament and is sky high on confidence at the moment. Svitolina will have her hands full.
Could be another dandy three setter, but I like Halep to prevail.
