Simona Halep and Eugenie Bouchard meet in the second round of the 2018 Australian Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Destanee Aiava that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 77 percent of her first serve points and 58 percent of her second serve points. Halep had to really fight to win the opening set of her match and then suffered a nasty ankle injury. Halep managed to win the second set rather easily, but her movement was limited at times, and the injury will be worth keeping an eye on throughout the week. Halep hopes to make her sixth grand slam third round appearance since 2016. Halep has won seven straight matches on hard court.
Eugenie Bouchard is coming off a straight sets win over Oceane Dodin that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Bouchard won 75 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Bouchard came into this tournament not winning a match since New Haven, so the victory had to feel good. It’s now a question if Bouchard can ever return to the form that we saw four years ago when she made three deep grand slam runs at such a young age. Only time will tell, but her opening victory was a good start. Bouchard hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time since 2016. Bouchard has lost six of her last seven matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Halep has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2014 WTA Championships, a match Halep won in two sets. Bouchard’s only career win over Halep came in the 2014 Wimbledon.
Halep’s ankle is a concern for me as we move forward, as she turned it nasty and wasn’t moving the same in the second set despite a victory. A day off should help, as she’ll receive around the clock care in hopes of getting back to 100 percent. Assuming Halep is good to go, she should win this match. Bouchard has done very little since her 2014 season and one victory doesn’t change much.
Halep should win this match in straight sets.
