Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Kristyna Pliskova that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 77 percent of her first serve points and 71 percent of her second serve points. Halep continues her dominance on clay court and is coming off a match in which she dropped just 14 total service points. When you throw in Halep’s court coverage and defensive effort every match, she’s unbeatable when she’s serving at such level. Halep has dropped just nine combined games in her first three matches and is arguably playing some of her best tennis of the season, which is saying something given her overall record. Halep hopes to make the semifinals of a Premier Mandatory for the fifth time in her last nine appearances. Halep hopes to make the semifinals of the Madrid Masters for the fourth time in five years. Halep has won 10 of her last 12 matches on clay court.
Karolina Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 73 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova got 78 percent of her first serves in play and was able to break her opponent four times. Pliskova isn’t getting as many free points with her serve that she does on hard court, but if she’s going to get majority of her first serves in, she still has the clear advantage. Pliskova has now made at least the quarterfinals in each of her last five tournaments. Pliskova hopes to make the semifinals of a Premier Mandatory for the fourth time in her career. Pliskova has never made the semifinals of the Madrid Masters. Pliskova has won eight straight matches on clay court.
These two have played eight times and Halep has won six of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Australian Open, a match Halep won in two quick sets. Halep has won each of the last three meetings against Pliskova and is 1-0 against her on clay.
Pliskova was able to breeze past a hot player in Stephens, somebody who gave her trouble in the past, but it’s tough seeing her do the same against Halep. The Romanian has dominated her over the years and has the return game to really control her serve on this slower surface. Not to mention Halep is the two-time defending champion here and has done nothing i three matches to suggest she won’t win it again.
Halep reaches the semis yet again.
