Simona Halep and Kirsten Flipkens meet in the first round of the 2016 US Open.

Simona Halep entered this match in great form after winning the Canadian Masters and making the semifinals in Cincinnati. Halep now hopes to carry that momentum into the US Open, a place where she made the semifinals last season. When Halep is hitting the ball like this and more aggressive with her service game, she’s one of the tougher players on tour to beat. It’ll be interesting to see if Halep can continue this run in a grand slam given her inconsistency in big tournaments. Halep has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2015. Halep has won eight of her last nine matches on hard court.

Kirsten Flipkens enters the US Open in improved form after winning a couple of matches in the olympics and making the quarterfinals in New Haven. Flipkens has been solid with her return game and is playing with a new level of confidence given her recent run. If Flipkens can get off to a strong start and control her nerves, she’ll feel like she has a chance to pull off an upset. However, Flipkens has lost in the first round of a grand slam in five of her last eight appearances. Flipkens has split her last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have played our times in the past and Halep has won all of the matches in straight sets. The most recent match was in the 2014 Cincinnati Masters, a match Halep won in 18 games. This will be the third match on hard court.

Halep is back to being in terrific form and should be very confident with a convincing head to head advantage. Halep hasn't lost a single set to Flipkens in four matches.

Halep rolls here.
