The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Lesia Tsurenko meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis Qatar Open.
Simona Halep is coming off two victories at the Fed Cup and has won five of her last six matches overall when you include a fourth round trip at the Australian Open. Halep is slowly working her way back from her back injury, and it’s still a work in progress considering she’s coming off a match in which she was broken six times. Once Halep figures it out, she’s obviously one of the more safer bets in women’s tennis. However, at the moment, you should be very cautious when it comes to laying serious money on the former No. 1 player in the world. Halep has split her last six matches on hard court.
Lesia Tsurenko is coming off a straight sets win over Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Tsurenko won 67 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Tsurenko won 66 percent of her total service points and converted six of her 13 break points. Tsurenko won each of the last 10 games to close the match, something that has to give her confidence moving forward, as it’s not often you see that sort of dominance. If Tsurenko can have that sort of success with her return again, she’s got a shot at an upset. Tsurenko has eight career wins over top-10 players, including one this season over Naomi Osaka in Brisbane. Tsurenko has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Halep has won all of those meetings, twice in straight sets. The most recent match was in Cincinnati of last year, a match Halep won in 17 games. However, that was the only meeting between these two since the 2014 Wimbledon.
Tsurenko is a worthy opponent and will be in this match if the sluggish and unsure Halep returns to the court. Halep had her moments at the Fed Cup and has had time to get back into form, but you just never know with the fiery Romanian. Assuming Halep is ready to serve at the level she’s capable of, she should win this match in straight sets. Past meetings between these two players weren’t that competitive, and Halep is a much better player now than years ago.
Give me Halep in straight sets.
