The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Madison Keys meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Naomi Osaka that took 13 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 66 percent of her first serve points and 61 percent of her second serve points. Halep simply dominated her opening match, winning 64 percent of her service points and 69 percent of her return points. It was one of Halep’s most complete performances of the season and losing just one game should give her a great deal of confidence moving forward. Halep hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the fourth time in her career. Halep has won five of her last seven matches on clay court.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Keys won 67 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Keys managed to win a match in which she was broken four times, as she won 48 percent of her return points. Keys has never been at her best on clay, buts he’s now won four straight sets on this surface, including two straight tiebreaks. Keys hopes to make the quarterfinals of a Premier Mandatory for the first time since the 2016 China Open. Keys has 13 career wins over top-10 players with one of them coming this year. Keys has split her last six matches on clay court.
These two have played six times and Halep has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in the WTA Championships, a match Halep won in straight sets. Keys’ only win over Halep came in Sydney of 2014. Halep has won five straight against Keys.
Halep has owned Keys in the past and a lot of it has to do with an aggressive player who piles up errors against a solid returner who makes you hit extra balls. It’s going to be even worse for Keys on this slow surface.
I like Halep to win her sixth straight match against the American.
