The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Magda Linette meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis French Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a three sets win over Ajla Tomljanovic that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 58 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 56 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 10 break points. Halep got 71 percent of her first serves in play and saved six of her 10 break points. It wasn’t the prettiest match from Halep, but she lost a combined three games in the two sets she won and was dominant with her return in the lopsided third set. Halep has won four of her last five matches that have gone the distance. Halep hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the seventh time in her last nine tries. Halep has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
Magda Linette is coming off a three sets win over Chloe Paquet that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Linette won 62 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Linette won 58 percent of her total service points and converted on seven of her 11 break points. Linette got 70 percent of her first serves in play and saved 10 of her 14 break points. Linette took over after dropping the first set, and it was quite impressive considering she’s lost five of her previous six matches outside of qualifying. Linette hasn’t won back-to-back matches on the main tour since Hua Hin back in February. Linette hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the third time in her career. Linette has lost five of her last six matches on clay court.
There’s no match history between these two players.
Give Linette credit for getting her sixth career grand slam win and ending what was a frustrating drought, but this is where things will end for the 27-year-old from Poland. Linette gives away far too many break points and doesn’t get enough on her serve to bother Halep. The Romanian should have little trouble with the return and will be able to sink her teeth in many games, pulling away in this match early.
I’ll take Halep in straight sets.
