Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka square off early in the third round of the 2016 French Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Zarina Diyas that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 52 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Halep was able to win her second round match rather easily despite being poor with her service game, as she got just 52 percent of her first serves in play. Halep has just 33 unforced errors in her first two matches and, her last four victories have come in straight sets. Even with her subpar service game, Halep looks sharp and ready to make a deep run. Halep has reached the fourth round of a grand slam in six of her last 10 appearances.
Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 63 percent of her first serve points and 36 percent of her second serve points. Osaka has been very impressive with her service game and has just beaten two top-50 players rather easily. Osaka has got no less than 64 percent of her first serves in play and has just 29 unforced errors. At just 18 years old, this is clearly a breakout season for Osaka, as she’s climbing up the rankings quickly and could really turn heads with an upset here. Osaka has never reached the fourth round of a grand slam in her young career, and this is her second apperance.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
You have to be impressed with Osaka, as she’s beaten two quality players with ease, and she’s only 18. She’s one to keep an eye on moving forward. However, you guys know I’m a huge fan of Halep’s game and don’t pick against her very often when she’s in this current form. There’s obviously a huge experience gap between these two.
Give me Halep to advance in straight sets.
