The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Simona Halep is 23-5 on the season and is coming off a quarterfinal loss to Karolina Pliskova in the Madrid Masters. Halep is winning a ton of matches and playing great overall, but she’s made just one final appearance this season and hasn’t won a title since last years Shenzhen Open. That has to be getting to Halep at some point, as all these deep tournament runs have to start paying off at some point. Still, Halep is playing at a high level at the moment and has been broken just once in her last three victories combined. Halep also made the final of the Italian Open last year, so she should have a certain level of confidence heading into this tournament. Halep has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.
Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Victoria Azarenka that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 70 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Osaka cruised in her opening match, winning 60 percent of her return points and producing five breaks. Osaka has been a bit of hit or miss recently, especially on clay, but she’s coming off one of her more complete performances in quite some time. If Osaka can play that clean tennis and be feisty with her return, she’s going to be a tough out. Osaka has four career wins over top-10 players. Osaka has split her last six matches on clay court.
These two have played four times in the past and Halep has won three of those meetings. The most recent meeting was in this years Indian Wells Masters, a match Osaka won in straight sets. Halep is 1-0 against Osaka on clay.
Osaka played a really impressive match and is capable of beating anybody at that level. Osaka should also be confident given the past meeting against Halep. However, Halep has been the more consistent player this season and is tough to bet against in her current form.
Give me Halep to win.
