Simona Halep has made it into the third round of the WTA Miami Open where she will face Polona Hercog from Slovenia.
Polona Hercog beat Misaki Doi in the previous round in straight sets. It was a simple win for Hercog as she won 73% of her service games and 36% of her return games. During the win, Hercog impressed with her returning as she won 46% of the points played during her opponent’s serve. This will be a much tougher test for Polona Hercog as she is playing the number 2 seed for this tournament.
On the other side of the court, Simona Halep showed her class in the previous round as she beat Taylor Townsend in straight sets. It was a dominant display by Simona Halep as she won 55% of her receiving points which led to her breaking Townend’s serve on 5 occasions. Halep backed up her receiving by serving very effectively as the Romanian won 88% of her service games. Halep looked very dominant during her win and it seems like she is very motivated to perform with the addition of her new coach. A motivated and inform Simona Halep will be very tough to stop in this tournament.
Polona Hercog and Simona Halep have played once in the past where Hercog beat Halep. It is important to note that the match was played 10 years ago in 2009 at a WTA 100K event.
As far as this match is concerned, I am going to pick Simona Halep to win. Simona Halep has been playing exceptional tennis and it is clear to see that she is a much more skilled player when compared to Polona Hercog. Halep in the second best player in the world and I see her living up to that reputation by winning this match and making the fourth round of the tournament.
