Serena vs. Halep
|Date & Time||Wednesday September 7, 2016, 9:00 PM (EDT)|
The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Serena Williams meet in the quarterfinals of the 2016 US Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Carla Suarez Navarro that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 65 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Halep continues to dominate opponents on hard court and has been in a completely different zone since winning the Bucharest Open. Halep has been able to turn the pressure up defensively and is winning a great deal of points on her return. Even to the top player in the world, Halep is a serious threat. Halep hopes to make her fourth career grand slam semifinal, which would include back-to-back appearances in the US Open. Halep has won 12 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Yaroslava Shvedova that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 93 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Serena has now won 24 of her last 26 sets and her shoulder looks just fine. Serena is finishing her points with confidence, hitting her spots and should have plenty left in the tank considering she has yet to really be pushed in a match yet. So far it’s been peek Serena who has now made the US Open quarterfinals for the ninth straight appearance. Serena hopes to make her ninth straight grand slam semifinal and her eighth straight US Open semifinal. Serena has won 12 of her last 15 matches on hard court.
These two have met eight times in the past and Serena has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Indian Wells Masters, a match Serena won in straight sets. Halep’s only win over Serena came in the 2014 WTA Championships. Serena has beaten Halep in four straight matches, three of which in straight sets.
Halep is in terrific form and one of my favorite players to back, as she’s fiesty and always puts up a fight. With Halep’s athleticism and improved serve, she could push Serena. However, beating her is a different story. Serena has owned Halep through their history and a lot of those matches weren't even that close. Also, Serena looks healthy and is playing in her favorite tournament. It’s going to be hard to knock off Serena unless her shoulder flares up again.
Competitive match, but Serena should advance to the semifinals.
