Simona Halep and Taylor Townsend meet in the second round of the 2019 tennis US Open..
Simona Halep is coming off a three sets win over Nicole Gibbs that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 63 percent of her first serve points and 72 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her seven break points. Halep needs to be better with her serve overall, but she’s finding ways to win matches she probably loses a couple of years ago. Halep has now won seven of her last eight matches that have gone the distance. Halep has lost before the third round of a grand slam four times since 2016. Halep hasn’t made the third round of the US Open since 2016. Halep has won four of her last six matches on hard court.
Taylor Townsend is coming off a three sets win over Kateryna Kozlova that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Townsend won 77 percent of her first serve points and 41 percent of her second serve points. Townsend won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on three of her 10 break points. Townsend got 69 percent of her first serves in play, saved four of her five break points and hit 12 aces. Townsend has now won three straight matches going back to qualifying, and all matches were won after dropping the first set. Townsend looks to make the third round of a grand slam for the second time in her career and the first time since the 2014 French Open. Townsend has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played three times and Halep has won all three matches in straight sets. The most recent match was this year in Miami, a match Halep won in 16 games.
Townsend has a chance to win this match if she continues to pile up the free points and use her power to push Halep around. The crowd on her side also doesn’t hurt. However, Halep was just tested in her last match and top tier players usually bounce back in a big way after being pushed early. There’s also a clear h2h advantage favoring Halep, as Townsend hasn’t had any success in three matches.
Halep should win this match, likely in straights.
