The Line: -- Over/Under:
Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka meet in the fourth round of the 2017 Wimbledon.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Shuai Peng that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 67 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Halep has yet to drop a set so far this tournament and has won no less than 42 percent of her return points. I’ve said many times in the past, as long as Halep is playing with a positive attitude and doesn’t let her frustration take over a match, she has to like her chances to beat anybody. Halep hopes to make her ninth career grand slam quarterfinal. Halep looks for her third career Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance. Halep has won five of her last six matches on grass court.
Victoria Azarenka is coming off a three sets win over Heather Watson that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Azarenka won 65 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Azarenka is slowly getting her feet under her, as she now has five matches under her belt this season and has come back twice this tournament after dropping the first set. Azarenka isn’t playing flawless tennis and is fresh off a match in which she had seven double faults, but her will to win and return ability is carrying her this far. Azarenka looks for her ninth grand slam quarterfinal since 2013. Azarenka also looks for her fifth career Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance. Azarenka has won eight of her last 10 matches on grass court.
These two have played three times and Azarenka has won two of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 US Open, a match Halep won in three sets. The other matches between these two took place in 2012.
I’m not sure Azarenka is ready for a player such as Halep, as her serve is still shaky and she’s dropped the first set to two lesser players. Halep won’t allow Azarenka to get away with the same errors, and you also have to question Victoria’s conditioning at this point, as she still has very little matches under her belt. Fatigue will be a factor at some point. Halep is too solid to lose this match.
I like Simona to prevail here.
