Simona Halep and Zarina Diyas square off in the second round of the 2016 French Open.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Nao Hibino that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 76 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Halep simply dominated the match, as she had just 11 unforced errors and won the final set 6-0. Haelp seems to have found her form since winning the Madrid Masters and is probably the biggest threat to Serena Williams in her current state. Halep has lost no more than six games in each of her last three victories. Halep has made the third round of a grand slam in six of her last nine appearances.
Zarina Diyas is coming off a three set win over Carina Witthoeft that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Diyas won 61 percent of her first serve points and 30 percent of her second serve points. Diyas clearly has to be more effective with her service game to pull off the upset, but you have to like the fact she bounced back after dropping the first set. Diyas really took control of the match and only had 22 unforced errors. Diyas also can’t be overlooked considering she has two wins over top-10 players, which includes beating Andrea Petkovic in 2015. Diyas has made the third round in four of her last seven grand slam appearances.
These two have faced twice in the past, and Help won both in straight sets. The two matches took place in the 2014 Wimbledon and 2014 Australian Open. Diyas has won just eight games against Halep in both matches.
I’m a huge fan of Halep and give her a chance to win this tournament if she can continue to play at this level. Diyas has a lot of potential for somebody who is still just 22 years old, but the head to head and overall experience in these matches don’t help her out that much.
Look for Halep to advance probably in straight sets.
