Simona Halep and Zheng Saisai meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Wimbledon.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Kurumi Nara that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 69 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Halep won 66 percent of her total service points and converted on four of 10 break chances. Despite 22 unforced errors, it was overall a solid performance for somebody who is fresh off winning the biggest title of her life. We’ve seen many times in the past players struggle after winning their first grand slam, but Halep handled the match well and seems to be focused to make another deep grand slam run. Halep hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the eighth time in her last 10 tries. Halep has lost before the third round of the Wimbledon in four of her previous seven appearances. Halep has won seven of her last nine matches on grass court.
Zheng Saisai is coming off a three sets win over Wang Qiang that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Saisai won 73 percent of her first serve points and 43 percent of her second serve points. Saisai won 61 percent of her total service points and produced on six of her 11 break chances. It wasn’t the cleanest match in the world considering Saisai had six double faults, but the 24-year-old will take a grand slam victory however she can get it. Saisai now has five career grand slam victories under her belt and has a shot at what would be the biggest win of her career. Saisai does have three career wins over top-10 players, and all three of those victories came in 2016. Saisai hopes to make the third round of a grand slam for the first time in her career. Zhang has split her last six matches on grass court.
These two have played once, which was in the 2015 Shenzhen Open, a match Halep won in straight sets. The match took 17 games to be decided.
Saisai has shown flashes of being able to compete with the best, but it’s been only flashes. She’s has almost zero grand slam success and makes far too many unforced errors to complete such a high level match. Halep is playing some of the best tennis of her life, and now that she got the monkey off her back, she’s as confident and comfortable as ever.
Halep wins this match in straight sets.
