Sloane Stephens and Anastasija Sevastova meet in the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open.

Sloane Stephens is coming off a three sets win over Julia Goerges that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 75 percent of her first serve points and 64 percent of her second serve points. Stephens has dropped just two sets this tournament and is coming off a match in which she won 42 percent of her return points. Given her impressive record on hard court despite the limited matches, it’s safe to say Stephens has found her rhythm on the tennis court and isn’t feeling many effects from her injury that forced her to be sidelined much of the year. Stephens hopes to make her second career grand slam semifinal and first since the 2013 Australian Open. Stephens has won seven of her last eight matches on hard court.

Anastasija Sevastova is coming off a three sets win over Maria Sharapova that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Sevastova won 78 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Sevastova showed great fight in her upset win, as she won 42 percent of her return points and simply dominated the third set. Sevastova is hitting with great pace, making very little unforced errors and you can see her growing with confidence each point. The 27-year-old has dropped just one set this tournament and is quickly proving she belongs on the big stage. Sevastova hopes to make her first career grand slam semifinal, and this is her second ever grand slam quarterfinal trip. Sevastova has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

This will be the first meeting on the tennis court.

This is a tough match to predict because Sevastova is probably in better form, but Stephens can raise her game to another level and has help from the American crowd. I want to pick Stephens in this match, but I like the way Sevastova is playing, and she made me a believer in her last match. She’s hitting with pace and playing very clean tennis overall.

I’ll go with Sevastova to reach her first grand slam semifinal.
