The Line — Over/Under:
Defending champion, Sloane Stephens has made it into the quarterfinals of the 2018 US Open where she will be playing Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia.
Anastasija Sevastova entered this tournament as the number 19 seed but has hugely exceeded her ranking. Sevastova beat number 9 seed, Elina Svitolina, in the fourth round, to make it into last 8. In the victory against Elina Svitolina, Sevastova was exceptional receiving serve. Anastasija Sevastova won 50% of the points while Svitolina was serving which allowed her to break service 5 times and led to the Latvian winning the match. That being said, Anastasija Sevastova will need to improve her serving in this match since she only won 64% of her points while serving and allowed Svitolina to break her serve 3 times. This could be costly for Sevastova in this match since Stephens will not allow her to win as many points while receiving.
Sloane Stephens, on the other hand, enters this match having beaten Elise Mertens convincingly in the round of 16. Stephens put in a very convincing performance as she served and received well. In the victory against Mertens, Sloane Stephens’ win percentage on the first serve was 72% while she only missed her first serve 17% of the time. Her receiving game was even more impressive as Stephens managed to break serve 5 times and win over 50% of the points while Elise Mertens was serving. Such a strong receiving game will be a huge advantage for Sloane Stephens in this match as she is playing an opponent who has been struggling to serve well.
These two players have met 3 times in the past with Sloane Stephens winning twice and Anastasija Sevastova winning only once. The most recent meeting was a few weeks ago at the Rogers Cup where Sloane Stephens won in straight sets. The other two meetings were in 2017 with one of those matches being at quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open. Stephens won that match in 3 sets. Anastasija Sevastova’s victory over Sloane Stephens came in late 2017 at the WTA Elite where she won in straight sets. All three of these matches between Sevastova and Stephens have been played on hard courts.
While Anastasija Sevastova has been very impressive in this tournament, I think her run will be ended by Sloane Stephens in this match. Stephens is receiving the ball very well and she should be able to take advantage of Anastasija Sevastova’s weak serve and break serve many times. In addition to that, Stephens will be very confident heading into this match having beaten Sevastova a few weeks ago. Taking all of the facts into consideration, Sloane Stephens should get the win and make her 2nd US Open semifinal.
