Sloane Stephens and Caroline Garcia meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Sloane Stephens is coming off a three sets win over Kaia Kanepi that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 57 percent of her first serve points and 55 percent of her second serve points. Stephens was broken five times in her victory, but she won 52 percent of her return points and produced eight breaks of her own. Stephens has played six sets just to get to this point and while clay isn’t her best service, she has to be rather confident given her ability to push through these matches. However, Stephens must be better with her service game if she’s going to last another match. Stephens hopes to make the quarterfinals of a Premier 5 tournament for the third time in her career. Stephens has won four of her last five matches on clay court.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a straight sets win over Timea Babos that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 72 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Garcia won 71 percent of her overall service points but was still broken four times. So, it’s quite clear Garcia is capable of playing more complete tennis and will have to in order to make a deeper tournament run. Garcia has had ups and downs in her play, but she usually finds a way to win regardless. Garcia hopes to make the quarterfinals of a Premier 5 tournament for the fourth time since 2015. Garcia has won six of her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have split their previous two meetings with Stephens winning in Eastbourne of 2014 and Garcia winning a 2014 Davis Cup.
Stephens has struggled in her first two matches, and Garcia is much more comfortable on clay. Despite sometimes needing to get down big to start playing, this is a match that should favor Garcia given the comfort level on this surface. Stephens is a power player who is limited and often frustrated on clay.
I like Garcia to win this match.
