Sloane Stephens and Johanna Konta meet in the third round of the 2019 tennis Wimbledon.
Sloane Stephens is coming off a straight sets win over Yafan Wang that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 68 percent of her first serve points and 63 percent of her second serve points. Stephens won 67 percent of her total service points and converted on six of her eight break points. Stephens got 81 percent of her first serves in play and won the first eight games of the match. Stephens has won all four sets this tournament and has hit a combined 44 winners, proving that she may not be that bad on grass court after all. Stephens looks to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the sixth time in her last eight appearances. Stephens hasn’t made the fourth round of the Wimbledon since 2014. Stephens has won two of her last three matches on grass court.
Johanna Konta is coming off a straight sets win over Katerina Siniakova that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Konta won 79 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Konta won 61 percent of her total service points and converted on two of her eight break points. Konta got 76 percent of her first serves in play, hit 24 winners and didn’t face a single break point. Konta has yet to be broken through her first four sets and each of her last eight victories have been decided in straight sets. Konta hopes to make her seventh career grand slam fourth round appearance and the second ever at Wimbledon. Konta has won four of her last five matches on grass court.
Konta has won all three meetings against Stephens, including the most recent match in this years French Open. Two of the three matches were decided in straight sets. This will be the first match on grass.
Konta has had little trouble against Stephens through three matches and is playing better tennis currently entering this match. Konta is more comfortable on grass and she does a wonderful job of controlling the pace and keeping the American on her heels. It also doesn’t hurt to be the crowd favorite in a match like this between two top-20 players in the world.
I have to give Konta the edge.
